Uganda Martyrs of Namugongo: A Story of Faith & Sacrifice

The Uganda Martyrs of Namugongo were a group of 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican converts to Christianity who were executed between 1885 and 1887 in Buganda, now part of Uganda. They were killed on orders of King Mwanga II, who saw the growing influence of Christianity as a threat to his power ¹.

The martyrs were mostly young men, many of whom were pages at the royal court. They were subjected to brutal treatment, including burning at the stake, for refusing to renounce their faith. The most famous of the martyrs is Charles Lwanga, who was burned alive on May 25, 1886 ².

The Uganda Martyrs’ Shrine in Namugongo, where the martyrs were killed, is now a major pilgrimage site and a symbol of Uganda’s Christian heritage. The martyrs were beatified by Pope Benedict XV in 1920 and canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1964 ¹.
